Van der Poel defends himself after deal with private jets: 'helps my performance'

Mathieu van der Poel has defended himself after criticism of his collaboration with a private jet company. Critics say his ambassadorship is irresponsible because, according to them, the cyclist does not take sufficient account of the climate.

“Pleased to announce that I am becoming an ambassador for Flying Group,” Van der Poel announced on social media on Thursday. Immediately after the message was published, an uproar arose because not everyone liked the deal.

“I really admire you as an athlete! But maybe you should also think about our environment. Don’t forget that you are a role model,” reads one of the reactions. “Take the train, man. And set a good example,” it also says.

Because of the commotion, the thirty-year-old Van der Poel decided to issue a statement, in response under his Instagram message. “I have read a number of comments and want to be open about my collaboration with Flying Group as a sustainable partner. I understand the concerns about the environment and I respect everyone’s voice,” writes the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider.

“At the same time, the way I travel is important for my sport and career. I work incredibly hard every day to perform at my highest level. That means making choices that protect my time, my health and my peace of mind. Relaxing flights, with less stress and exposure, helps me stay focused and healthy.”

Many top athletes travel by private jet. This often leads to criticism from society. Max Verstappen has also come under fire in the past for opting for a private plane. Van der Poel is currently preparing for the Tour de France, which starts in Lille on Saturday.
