Van de Zandschulp loses Week for Wimbledon at Rentree on Mallorca

Botic van de Zandschulp could not celebrate his return with a victory on Saturday. The number two Dutch tennis player lost in the qualifying rounds of the Mallorca grass tournament to the American Nishesh Basavareddy: 4-6, 7-6 (5) and 5-7.

The 29-year-old Van de Zandschulp (ATP-91) leveled the score in the second set via a tiebreak with the nine-year-younger Basavareddy (ATP-102). The American underwent medical treatment in the third set but was still able to beat the Veenendaler.

For Van de Zandschulp, it was his first match since Roland Garros, where he lost in three sets in the opening round to the American Emilio Nava. He withdrew earlier this month with an arm injury from the Rosmalen grass tournament and was also not in action on grass last week.

In addition, Van de Zandschulp broke with his coach Peter Lucassen last week. Van de Zandschulp has not yet appointed a successor to Lucassen nine days before the start of Wimbledon. The tennis player has been directly admitted to the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Tallon Griekspoor is also making his return in Mallorca. The best tennis player in the Netherlands retired in the fourth round of Roland Garros with an abdominal injury against Alexander Zverev and has not been in action since. He has been directly admitted to the main tournament at the last preparation tournament for Wimbledon.
