Botic van de Zandschulp

Botic van de Zandschulp did not succeed in reaching the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Bastad, Sweden, on Thursday. The Dutchman lost in three sets to Argentinian Camilo Ugo Carabelli: 7-6 (3), 5-7, and 6-3.

In the first set, Van de Zandschulp and Ugo Carabelli were evenly matched. The 29-year-old from Veenendaal had two set points with a 4-5 lead. Ugo Carabelli fought them all off and forced Van de Zandschulp to play a tiebreak.

Van de Zandschulp started strong in the tiebreak and placed the first mini-break. He then carelessly surrendered three service turns, after which Ugo Carabelli, in contrast to Van de Zandschulp, did use his second set point.

That blow seemed to overwhelm Van de Zandschulp, until the world number one hundred fought back in a clever way from a 4-2 deficit. Van de Zandschulp placed two breaks, after which he dragged in the set on his own service.

In the third and decisive set, things still went wrong for Van de Zandschulp. He was broken at a 2-1 score, after which he lagged behind. Ugo Carabelli used his second match point after 2 hours and 52 minutes.
