UN: Gazans have inhumane choice between starving or being killed

The United Nations human rights office has lashed out at Israel for the situation at food distribution locations of the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). According to the UN body, more than four hundred Gazans have already been killed and at least three thousand injured.

“Desperate, hungry people in Gaza continue to face an inhumane choice: starve or risk being killed while trying to get food,” said a spokesperson for Thameen Al-Kheetan, the UN Human Rights Commissioner, in a statement.

The UN Human Rights Office stated on Tuesday that at least 410 people have been killed at GHF locations so far. In addition, according to the organization, another 93 Gazans were killed when they approached UN aid convoys.

The UN points an accusing finger at the Israeli army. The army itself invariably states in such incidents that warning shots were fired or that shots were fired because groups of Gazans deviated from the approach routes and came near Israeli troops.

According to the UN body, the aid provided by GHF actually further worsens the already “catastrophic humanitarian situation” in Gaza. Residents have to travel long distances through shattered areas, often in the dark. As a result, Gazans are exposed to great risks. You can read more about the situation in this article.

Israel wants to keep goods out of the hands of Hamas

Israel claims that this setup is necessary to prevent aid goods from falling into the hands of Hamas. The militant movement allegedly seized between 15 and 25 percent of the aid, the army said earlier this month after investigation.

Earlier on Tuesday, new deaths were reported at GHF points. According to press agency AFP, broadcaster Al Jazeera and the Palestinian press agency WAFA, at least twenty people were killed.
