Two DNA matches in 16-year-old cold case of murdered sex worker Amsterdam

The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) has found two DNA matches in the cold case investigation surrounding the murdered sex worker Betty Szabó. The investigation team expects to quickly identify the ‘hits’. The police request these individuals to report themselves to the police.

The nineteen-year-old Szabó was found dead in 2009 in a brothel on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal in Amsterdam. She had been stabbed to death with dozens of stab wounds. DNA traces that were secured at the time have led to the matches thanks to new techniques.

Presumably, these are customers of Szabó. The police are calling on all her customers from that evening to report themselves. “Otherwise, there is a chance that, following the DNA match, the police will contact you soon,” reports Opsporing Verzocht on Tuesday evening.

The police are also looking for a specific shoe that made a print in the room where Betty was murdered. It contained blood from the stabbed sex worker. The police will make public photos of the shoe print.

In addition, the police would like to get in touch with “Simon”, according to the police “a possibly very important witness”. Simon worked in the building where Betty worked and was also present that evening. The police do not know where Simon, who has Indonesian and Dutch nationality, is located.

At the end of 2024, the detectives placed a hologram of Betty in the Red Light District to draw attention to the case. It was the first time that such a method was used for a cold case. After that, dozens of tips came in.
