In an industrial accident in the Waalhaven in Rotterdam, two people died on Thursday morning. Two others were seriously injured, the police report on X.
A total of four people were involved in the accident. Two of them died on the spot, the other two were seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
The industrial accident took place on a ship at the closed industrial site near Pier 6 and 7 in the port, a spokesperson for the safety region tells NU.nl. What exactly happened is still unclear. The Labor Inspectorate is investigating the incident, but cannot yet say anything about the cause.
A crane from the port company was used to bring emergency workers to the ship and to get the seriously injured victims out of the hold. Whether they were working there or fell into it is not yet clear. The fatal victims are still on board. According to the spokesperson for the safety region, a “neat and respectful” way is being sought to get the bodies out of the hold.
The police received a report about the accident around 7:45 a.m. A trauma helicopter was deployed and the police and fire brigade are present.
Last year, a fatal industrial accident also took place in the Waalhaven. The victim was in a lift basket on a piling rig, which then fell over.
