Tv-analist Gary Neville is zondag niet welkom bij de laatste competitiewedstrijd van Nottingham Forest. De oud-international kreeg geen accreditatie van de club vanwege kritiek op de veelbesproken eigenaar Evangelos Marinakis.
De vijftigjarige Neville zou als co-commentator voor de Britse televisiezender Sky Sports de cruciale wedstrijd van Nottingham Forest tegen Chelsea becommentariëren. Bij een zege plaatst Nottingham zich mogelijk voor de Champions League.
Neville kreeg donderdag te horen dat hij het stadion niet in komt. “In de veertien jaar dat ik dit werk doe, heb ik mijn portie kritiek en lof gehad. Maar ik ben nog nooit in de buurt gekomen van deze ongekende actie”, schrijft hij op Instagram.
Recent sprak Neville zich kritisch uit over eigenaar Marinakis, die direct na de wedstrijd tegen Leicester City (2-2) op het veld in discussie ging met zijn trainer Nuno. Neville noemde de actie van Marinakis “schandalig” en riep Nuno op te gaan onderhandelen over een vertrek.
Die woorden schoten in het verkeerde keelgat van Marinakis, die beweerde het veld op te zijn gekomen om zijn zorgen te uiten over de zwaar geblesseerd geraakte spits Taiwo Awoniyi en het handelen van de medische staf. Hij dreigde met juridische stappen tegen Sky Sports.
Neville staat er sowieso al slecht op bij Nottingham Forest. Toen de club vorig jaar na een nederlaag bij Everton een boze verklaring uitbracht over de VAR, vergeleek de voormalig rechtsback de acties van de eigenaar met die van een “maffiabende”. Sky bood daarvoor zijn excuses aan.

The fifty-year-old Neville was supposed to co-commentate on Nottingham Forest’s crucial match against Chelsea for the British television channel Sky Sports. With a win, Nottingham could potentially qualify for the Champions League.
Neville was told on Thursday that he would not be allowed into the stadium. “In the fourteen years that I have been doing this job, I have had my share of criticism and praise. But I have never come close to this unprecedented action,” he wrote on Instagram.
Neville recently spoke critically about owner Marinakis, who went onto the field to argue with his coach Nuno immediately after the match against Leicester City (2-2). Neville called Marinakis’ action “scandalous” and called on Nuno to negotiate a departure.
Those words angered Marinakis, who claimed to have come onto the field to express his concerns about the seriously injured striker Taiwo Awoniyi and the actions of the medical staff. He threatened legal action against Sky Sports.
Neville is already in a bad position at Nottingham Forest anyway. When the club issued an angry statement about the VAR after a defeat at Everton last year, the former right-back compared the owner’s actions to those of a “mafia gang”. Sky apologized for that.
