Turkey revokes proposal to EU to give Döner kebab protected status

Turkey withdrawn a proposal from the European Union (EU) on Tuesday to give Döner Kebab a protected status. In the case of recognition, sellers of the original Turkish court should have met strict requirements.

The Turkish International Döner Federation (Udofed) made a request to the EU in April last year to recognize the Döner Kebab as a Turkish regional product. That would get a special status, just like Spanish Serranoham.

Upon approval, Dönerzaken in the EU could only call the product Döner Kebab if that met strict requirements. The meat could then only be cattle, sheep or chicken. Lamb, vegetarian options and pork were then out of the question. Moreover, a 55 -centimeter -long steel knife could only be used before cutting. In Turkey that is tradition.

The plan encountered the necessary criticism from a number of European countries, in particular Germany. In that country, Döner Kebab is a popular dish that has deviated from the original Turkish variant over the years. The court is also popular in the Netherlands.

Ankara believes that the court should be labeled as a national court, because it is spread throughout Europe by migration of Turks. Berlin claims that the German Kebab has since become part of German cuisine.

The former German minister Cem Özdemir, who is of Turkish origin, previously showed his surprise about the plan to BBC News . “Döner Kebab belongs to Germany,” he said.

Earlier this week, Turkey announced to Brussels the request for protected status.
