TU Eindhoven (TU/e) is not currently entering into new collaborations with institutions in Israel because of “the humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza. The university also freezes cooperation with the Israeli University of Technion, which has “unmistakably strong ties” with the defense sector.
The TU/e board announced the measures on Monday in the University Council. The Technical University follows, among other things, the University of Amsterdam, Radboud University in Nijmegen, Tilburg University and Erasmus University Rotterdam. These institutions also took measures to at least reduce collaborations with Israel.
The TU/e also sets up a special committee that must assess “sensitive collaborations” next month. In the meantime, there will be no new “institutional” collaborations with Israeli partners. Individual scientists keep some freedom, but they must be “extra careful”.
According to the TU/e board, it is “inevitable” to take these types of steps. Chairman Koen Janssen says in a statement that he and his fellow administrators “with great sorrow” look at the developments in Gaza. They see Israel’s violence against the Palestinians as increasingly serious human rights violations.
Technion works mainly in a European context. According to the university, the research of the TU/e is “always aimed at making the world better”. The projects in which there is cooperation are not in itself a military nature, but the board acknowledges that some civilian projects can eventually be used for military purposes. This is called dual use of technology.
