U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday evening that his country will send more weapons to Ukraine. These are mainly defensive weapons. Last week, the U.S. suspended the delivery of certain weapons to Ukraine.
“We have to send them new weapons. They have to be able to defend themselves,” Trump said. According to him, Ukraine is currently being “hit very hard.”
The U.S. Department of Defense confirms the additional arms deliveries. It is unclear exactly which weapons will be delivered and how many.
The Pentagon stopped previously agreed arms deliveries to Ukraine last week. This would have to do with dwindling arms supplies.
After a telephone conversation with Trump a few days later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that they had agreed to work on “better protection of the airspace.”
Trump said he was considering sending more Patriot missiles to Ukraine. According to Ukraine, these are essential for protection against intensifying Russian air strikes. On Friday, according to Ukraine, the Russians carried out the largest drone attack since the beginning of the war.
The conversation followed a telephone conversation between Trump and Putin a day earlier. According to Trump, no progress was made towards a ceasefire. He called the conversation “disappointing.” On Monday, Trump repeated his dissatisfaction with his Russian counterpart. “I’m not happy with him at all.”
Earlier this year, the Americans temporarily suspended all military aid to Kyiv. Since the beginning of his second term, Trump has not announced any additional arms deliveries to Ukraine.
