The American President Donald Trump says that various countries will receive mail on Monday regarding import duties. According to him, letters with more information about trade agreements and import duties will arrive around 6:00 PM (Dutch time).
“Tariff letters and/or deals with countries all over the world are being delivered starting Monday, July 7th, 12:00 AM,” Trump writes on his platform Truth Social.
A day earlier, the American Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, said on news channel CNN that Trump will be making major announcements in the coming days.
Trump previously set the deadline of July 9th for an agreement on trade tariffs. If no agreement is reached, the high duties of April 2nd will apply, Bessent warned. According to the minister, those tariffs will then take effect on August 1st.
The EU and US further negotiated an agreement last weekend, European officials said Friday. The European Commissioner for Trade, Maros Sefcovic, was in Washington this week to discuss this. Those talks were said to be productive, but it remains unclear how close the parties are to a deal.
Trump Threatening Towards Countries Critical of the US
Trump has threatened to increase the levy on goods from the EU from 10 to 20 percent. He has even threatened a levy of 50 percent.
Due to “anti-American policy,” the BRICS countries face additional levies of 10 percent. BRICS is an economic partnership of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Indonesia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Ethiopia and is seen as a counterpart to the G7.
On Sunday, BRICS leaders condemned the recent Israeli-American attacks on Iran. They also warned that world trade is being threatened by the increase in import duties.
