The American President Donald Trump has given Russia a new deadline on Monday to end the war in Ukraine. He is now giving Moscow “ten to twelve days”. The specific deadline will follow tonight or tomorrow.
Two weeks ago, the American president warned the Russians with “very heavy levies” if they did not conclude a deal on a ceasefire in Ukraine within fifty days. That number of days has now been adjusted considerably.
“I am disappointed in President Putin. Very disappointed,” Trump told reporters during his meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. “That is why I am going to reduce the fifty days that I have given him to a smaller number.”
If no deal is concluded, the United States will come up with “secondary levies” against Russia. This means that countries that import sanctioned goods from Russia will also be affected by the sanctions. Two weeks ago, Trump was still talking about tariffs of 100 percent.
Since Trump set the deadline of fifty days, there has still been no clear breakthrough in the negotiations.
