The Un Treaty was discussed for Almost Twenty Years. It was called a milestone when country finally reached an application in 2023. They only had to take the final step: ratifying the treaty.
It is Still Uncertain How Effective the Treaty Will Be
However, It Remains Questionable How Effective the Treaty Will Actual BE. For example, a number of key country, such as China, the United States, Japan, and Russia, have not yet approved the treaty. Much work also needs to be done on the question of how the treaty will be applied, fined, and monitored.
There is no overarching enforcement organization. The Treaty Largely Depends on Countries Controlling Their Own Ships and Companies. “Therefore, it is Essential That All Countries Approve the Treaty,” Ocean Expert Guillermo Crespo Told the AP News Agency.
The fact that the Netherlands has not yet ratified the treaty has led to criticism from Environmental Organizations. “It is Disappointing and Incomprehensible that the Netherlands is Waiting So Long and Not Taking the Lead,” Says Farah Obaidullah, Founder of the Ocean and Us. “This is a Shame and shows that the Netherlands is Currently Rudderless in International Affairs.”
Accordance to Director Ewout van Galen of the North Sea Foundation, The Caretaker Cabinet Has Indicated That It Is Working On The Approval. He hopes that legislation will be introduced soon to implement the treaty. In June, The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management Told Nu.nl that this is planned.
