The traffic congestion peaked around 4:50 PM on Friday with 1,046 kilometers of traffic jams, mainly in the border regions. The ANWB (Dutch Automobile Association) suspects that the congestion will continue until 7:00 PM. The delay was already expected due to the upcoming Pentecost weekend and the NS (Dutch Railways) strike.
“The busiest moment is behind us, but it remains crowded in many places,” reports an ANWB spokesperson. Around 5:30 PM, there were 890 kilometers of traffic jams on the highways. The expectation is that it will remain busy until 7:00 PM. “But due to the rainy weather, it may take longer.”
Traffic is mainly congested in the central Netherlands, Gelderland, and the south. There are also traffic jams at the German border, partly due to border controls. It was already busy early in the afternoon.
It is not clear whether the NS personnel strike plays a role in the congestion. Due to the strike, virtually no trains are running on Friday.
Last year, on the Friday before Pentecost, there were 600 kilometers of traffic jams at the peak.
