Top golfer Scheffler has doubts: "Why do I actually want to win tournaments?"

Topgolfer Scottie Scheffler has made remarkable statements on Tuesday. The American world number one derives little satisfaction from winning tournaments. “Golf is simply not the most important thing in my life.”

Scheffler has been the best golfer in the world for years. The 29-year-old American won the Masters in Augusta in 2022 and 2024, considered by many players to be the most important tournament in the sport. Yet that doesn’t affect him much.

“There is a euphoric feeling for two minutes after winning a tournament, but then you wonder what the point is,” Scheffler said Tuesday at a press conference leading up to the British Open in Portrush, Northern Ireland. “This is not a fulfilling life.”

“I struggle daily with the question of why I want to win a tournament so badly. It gives a brief moment of satisfaction for the achievement, but it doesn’t fulfill the deepest feeling in your heart.”

“I am blessed that I can play golf, but if the sport ever affects my private life or relationship with my wife or son, then I am done playing for a living,” Scheffler concluded. “It’s simply not the most important thing in my life. I would much rather be a great father.”

Scheffler has been leading the world rankings continuously for 112 weeks. He has never won the British Open. The tournament starts on Thursday and lasts until Sunday.
