Primoz Roglic suffered a costly time loss in the fifteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday. The top favorite lost a minute and a half to his competition. Carlos Verona won, achieving the biggest victory of his career.
Roglic had to let go in the stage to Asiago with about 25 kilometers to go. He couldn’t keep up when the competition accelerated on the Dori, a category two climb.
The 2023 winner tried to limit the damage, but had to concede a minute and a half to pink jersey wearer Isaac del Toro. Thymen Arensman was able to keep up with the pace at the front and rises one place in the general classification due to Roglic’s collapse. The Dutchman is now ninth, 8 seconds ahead of number ten Roglic.
The battle for the general classification raged behind Verona, who started a strong solo 45 kilometers from the finish. The 32-year-old Spaniard gave his team Lidl-Trek their sixth stage success in this Giro d’Italia.
For Lidl-Trek, it was a day of extremes. Giulio Ciccone did not start in the fifteenth stage after his crash the day before. As a result, the leader lost a lot of time in the general classification.
The Giro d’Italia enters its last rest day on Monday. The Italian stage race ends next week Sunday in Rome.
