Joanne van Lieshout missed out on medals at the World Judo Championships in Budapest. The titleholder had to acknowledge her superior in the Brazilian Nauana Silva in her second match in the class up to 63 kilograms.
Silva decided the match on waza-ari. The South American is number seventeen in the world. Van Lieshout is third on the world ranking list.
Van Lieshout tried against Silva with an arm swing, but that attack failed. The Brazilian scored shortly afterwards with a throw.
The 22-year-old Van Lieshout started the tournament with a bye and had won in the second round against the Australian Katharina Haecker.
Abu Dhabi
Van Lieshout became world champion for the first time last year in Abu Dhabi. She then defeated the Polish Angelika Szymanska in the final. It was the only medal for the Netherlands of that World Cup.
Last year, Van Lieshout also missed out on medals at the Olympic Games in Paris, just like all other Dutch judokas. It led to a major reorganization at the judo association.
Earlier this year, Van Lieshout won bronze at the European Championships in Montenegro.
