The Dutch cycling team goes to the World Cup in Rwanda without an absolute leader. As is known, national coach Kooshout cannot have Mathieu van der Poel, but does take Tour de France-Uitblinker Thymen Arensman to Africa.
Van der Poel skips the country race in Rwanda. The world champion of 2023 prefers the World Cup mountain bike above the World Cup road race.
“We have no outspoken favorite this year, such as Mathieu van der Poel,” says national coach Moerenhout on Monday in the KNWU press release. “This offers space to flexibly enter this course.”
“Thymen Arensman, good for two stage victories in the Tour, has of course shown fantastic things. This will certainly be a spearhead. But also a number of other riders will certainly get the freedom to mix towards the final,” continues Moerenhout.
In addition to Arensman, Bauke Mollema, Wout Poels, Koen Bouwman, Sam Oomen and Frank van den Broek are also part of the Dutch World Cup selection. Arensman will also take care of the time trial.
Moerenhout sees opportunities for the Netherlands
Although the Netherlands does not have a top favorite for the overall victory, Moerenhout does see opportunities. “We have to anticipate well and make it at the right time that we are gone. Perhaps we can even make a surprise.”
