The Council of State does not think that the government should do more to prevent the tiger mosquito from entering our country. The mosquito can convey diseases and enters the Netherlands through imported tires, among other things.
Wilfred Reinhold from Platform Stop Invasive Exoten has been fighting against the tiger mosquito for years. He wants to prevent the insect from setting up in the Netherlands. The mosquito can sting fiercely (also during the day) and transfer tropical diseases such as Zika and Dengue.
The mosquito arrives, among other things, through imported car tires in our country. If there is a layer of water in it, the tiger mosquito can lay eggs in it in Italy or Spain, for example. They can then come true if the tires are now in the Netherlands.
To prevent that, it is forbidden to import tires that are wet. Companies must also store them dry. But according to Reinhold, that doesn’t always happen. Tiger mosquitoes have been found at some companies. He wants the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) stricter against those companies.
The State Secretary for Health believes that the NVWA does not have to do that. Reinhold went to court, but he didn’t agree with him. The Council of State will come to the same judgment on Wednesday.
The Council of State believes that the government does not have to maintain because the tire importers generally comply with the rules. Those rules prescribe for that tire importers have to put “everything in everything” to prevent tiger mosquitoes from entering the site. The presence of tiger mosquitoes itself is not prohibited.
It is a bit legally, but the fact that the mosquitoes are there does not automatically mean that the tires have not been imported dry. And so the companies that import tires do not violate rules.
At a tire company in Montfoort in Utrecht, water supplied on 2 of the 165 water supplied was found four years ago. The NVWA thought she didn’t have to maintain that either. It only concerned 1 or 2 percent of the tires and the company had not brought the rules before, the regulator said. The Council of State goes along with this and does not think that the government should maintain.
Incidentally, the tiger mosquito also comes in the Netherlands in other ways. Holidaymakers or truck drivers can include flourishing mosquitoes from countries such as France, Italy and Spain in the caravan or cabin.
At the moment the tiger mosquito is not a permanent resident of the Netherlands. The mosquitoes have been seen in several places in the country. Experts fear that it will only take a few years before the mosquito settles in the Netherlands.
The Council of State Does Not Believe That The Government Needs to Do More to Prevent The Asian Tiger Mosquito From Entering The Country. The Mosquito Can Transmit Diseases and Enters The Netherlands via Imported Tires, Among Other Things.
