Team with Dutch diver finds sunken British frigate from First World War

An international research team has localized and identified the British frigate HMS Nottingham in the North Sea. The precise location of the naval ship was unclear for 110 years. On August 19, 1916, the HMS Nottingham was sinked by a German submarine.

Based on reports of the crew of the German submarine U-52, there was already a suspicion where the HMS Nottingham had to be. In April, the ProjectXplore research team came across a wreck while scanning the seabed.

The dimensions of the wreck, located at 80 meters depth and about 96 kilometers from the Scottish coast, corresponded to those of the 139 -meter -long war base. A diving expedition then had to make clear whether this was really the HMS Nottingham. That expedition was carried out earlier this month.

Divers, including a Dutchman, then saw that the armament of the wreck corresponded to that of the HMS Nottingham. The arrangement of the four chimneys – with two thicker chimneys in the middle – also beat. Finally, the divers in various places on the wreck met the name ‘HMS Nottingham’.

With the exact location of the ship, the last resting place of 38 missing people were also found, reports ProjectXplore in a press release. A number of them were less than twenty years old. The British navy has been informed about the find of the frigate.

The German U-52 returned to the last known location of the British ship about ten hours after the attack. The German crew found three lifeboats there. Two of them were unmanned. There was a cat in the third lifeboat.

Ships often had cats on board to combat vermin and for moral. According to ProjectXplore, the German report does not make clear what happened to the cat.
