Teambaas Christian Horner is woensdag na twintig jaar ontslagen bij Red Bull Racing. De Brit wordt verantwoordelijk gehouden voor de mindere resultaten van het Formule 1-team van Max Verstappen.
De 51-jarige Horner lag nog tot en met 2030 vast bij het energiedrankjesbedrijf. Hij wordt bij Red Bull opgevolgd door Laurent Mekies, die sinds vorig jaar teambaas was bij zusterteam Racing Bulls.
Horner stond al enige tijd onder druk bij Red Bull. Begin 2024 werd hij beschuldigd van grensoverschrijdend gedrag tegenover een vrouwelijke medewerker. Horner werd na een onderzoek vrijgesproken.
De prestaties van Red Bull vallen dit jaar tegen. Viervoudig wereldkampioen Verstappen staat derde in de WK-stand en heeft een forse achterstand op McLaren-coureurs Oscar Piastri en Lando Norris.
Verstappen begon dit jaar met Liam Lawson als teamgenoot, maar de Nieuw-Zeelander werd al na twee races teruggestuurd naar Racings Bulls. Diens opvolger Yuki Tsunoda presteert ook slecht in de Red Bull. De Japanner staat halverwege het seizoen zeventiende in de WK-stand.
Horner was de langstzittende teambaas in de Formule 1. De Engelsman stond sinds de oprichting in 2005 aan het roer van Red Bull Racing. Hij won vier wereldtitels met zowel Sebastian Vettel als Verstappen.

The 51-year-old Horner was contracted to the energy drink company until 2030. He will be succeeded at Red Bull by Laurent Mekies, who has been team boss at sister team Racing Bulls since last year.
Horner had been under pressure at Red Bull for some time. In early 2024, he was accused of transgressive behavior towards a female employee. Horner was acquitted after an investigation.
Red Bull’s performances have been disappointing this year. Four-time world champion Verstappen is third in the World Championship standings and has a significant gap to McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Verstappen started this year with Liam Lawson as his teammate, but the New Zealander was sent back to Racings Bulls after just two races. His successor Yuki Tsunoda is also performing poorly in the Red Bull. The Japanese driver is seventeenth in the World Championship standings halfway through the season.
Horner was the longest-serving team boss in Formula 1. The Englishman has been at the helm of Red Bull Racing since its inception in 2005. He won four world titles with both Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen.
