Suriname cannot stunt Mexico and is eliminated on Gold Cup

Suriname was eliminated from the Gold Cup on Wednesday. Coach Stanley Menzo’s team lost their second group match against Mexico in Arlington, USA: 2-0.

César Montes was the key player for defending champion Mexico. The defender beat FC Groningen goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen twice after halftime. Former Ajax player Edson Álvarez started for Mexico. Former Feyenoord player Santiago Giménez came on as a substitute.

Menzo included Liam van Gelderen, Ridgeciano Haps, Dion Malone, Kenneth Paal, Richonell Margaret, Jean-Paul Boëtius, Shaquille Pinas, and Gyrano Kerk in the starting lineup, all of whom debuted as professionals in the Netherlands.

Suriname also lost their first group match against Costa Rica (4-3). As a result, ‘Natio’ can no longer finish among the top two teams in the group. Suriname concludes the Gold Cup on Sunday with a match against the Dominican Republic, who are also already eliminated.

The Gold Cup, intended for countries from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, lasts until July 7. Curaçao still has a chance for a place in the quarterfinals. Coach Dick Advocaat’s team plays their second group match against Canada on Saturday.
