The Zomercarnaval (Summer Carnival) in Rotterdam on Saturday proceeded without major incidents, according to the organizers and the police. Mayor Carola Schouten is “very proud” of how the event went. However, 35 to 40 people were arrested by the police.
The event benefited from the good weather and, according to the organizers, attracted as many visitors as in previous years. Visitors could enjoy dozens of floats with dancers.
The organization estimates that tens of thousands of people lined the route. An official number of visitors could not be determined, because the event did not have a closed festival area.
According to the organization, there were no major incidents. The police confirmed this, although 35 to 40 people were arrested for, among other things, possession of weapons, violence against officers, failure to show identification, and public intoxication.
During an extensive preventive search operation, the police found several weapons, including three firearms, which were confiscated. These findings led directly to arrests. According to a police spokesperson, this proves that preventive searching is effective. Elsewhere, the police found another firearm.
