Summer and even tropical heat in the coming days: 'Sun strength is maximum'

Wednesday marks a transition to summery and even tropical heat on Thursday and Friday. Due to the so-called Spanish plume, temperatures will rise to 30 degrees. Moreover, the solar intensity will be at its highest possible level in the Netherlands, so keep sunscreen handy.

“Wednesday is really a transition day. It will remain dry, but it won’t get warmer than 18 to 22 degrees,” says Berend van Straaten of Weerplaza.

But it is wise to have sunscreen ready today, especially for the coming days. Because then, according to Van Straaten, we will be dealing with the Spanish plume. That is a bubble of warm air from Southern Europe that comes our way due to a rotation of the wind.

On Thursday it will be summery warm throughout the country: 25 degrees. In the south, temperatures of 27 and 28 degrees will be reached. “That’s warm for the time of year,” says Van Straaten. That day the sun shines brightly and it remains dry.

That weather will continue on Friday. It will then be tropical warm: locally it can be 30 to 32 degrees and it will be stuffy, warns Van Straaten. It is important to apply sunscreen very well, because the sun reaches a force of 7 or 8. “That is the maximum achievable in the Netherlands. At a solar intensity of 8, unprotected skin can burn within ten minutes.”

Next week mild and pleasant weather

The extreme weather does not last long and ends with a chance of thunderstorms. Especially on Friday evening there is a chance of thunder and lightning in the south of the country.

Although it will be 22 degrees in the west on Saturday and locally 30 degrees in the east, the sharpness is gone. It may also rain during the weekend.

But in the new week it will be “typical June weather”. It is calm and pleasant with a temperature of 20 to 23 degrees. It remains dry and there is plenty of room for the sun.
