Stranded Russian mountaineer probably died at a height of 7,000 meters

The Kyrgyz authorities think that a Russian mountaineer on the highest mountain in the country has died. More than two weeks ago the woman got stuck at a height of about 7,000 meters after she broke her leg.

Natalia Nagovitsyna climbed the victory peak, the highest mountain in Kyrgyzstan. The mountain is on the border with China and is 7,439 meters high.

The Kyrgyz State Security Service reports that a drone with a heat imaging camera was used in the area where the 47-year-old Nagovitsyna got stuck. No sign of life has been found, writes AFP news agency.

Emergency services and other mountain climbers tried to save Nagovitsyna earlier, but in vain for the time being. The Italian climber Luca Sinigaglia died on August 15 when he tried to save Nagovitsyna. A rescue helicopter crashed into the mountain area and a group of climbers had to stop the rescue attempt because the leader became seriously ill.

Another group of climbers have previously managed to reach Nagovitsyna. They could provide her with some food. But due to the extreme conditions on the mountain it was impossible to evacuate hair. Experts said earlier that no one had ever been evacuated on the mountain from such a large height.

Last weekend the weather conditions deteriorated so much that all rescue operations were stopped. The temperature in the Central Asian mountain area fell to 30 degrees below zero at night. Those temperatures were accompanied by strong wind and snowstorms.
