Spectacle again at Sinner-Alcaraz? You should know this about the Wimbledon final

The memorable Roland Garros final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz was only 35 days ago, but tennis fans are in for a treat. In the Wimbledon final, the world number one and two will face each other again on Sunday. Here’s what you need to know about that meeting.

Sinner and Alcaraz have together won seven of the last eight Grand Slam titles. Only Novak Djokovic managed to break the streak of the two young top tennis players at the US Open of 2023. On Sunday, another title will be added for either the 23-year-old Sinner or the one-year-younger Alcaraz.

The last five meetings between the Spaniard and Italian were won by Alcaraz. The last time Sinner won was in the semi-finals of the ATP tournament of Beijing in 2023. Sinner was then too strong for Alcaraz in two sets.

Since then, Alcaraz has been undefeated in mutual encounters, but on grass the five-time Grand Slam winner has never won against his peer. It should be noted that they have only faced each other once on grass. That was in the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022.

In the second meeting on the sacred grass in London, Sinner starts with an advantage. He was only on the court for 11 hours and 45 minutes on his way to the final. Alcaraz had a tougher tournament. He had to work hard and was already on the grass for 16 hours and 31 minutes.

Third title in a row for Alcaraz?

Alcaraz has already won Wimbledon twice, while Sinner will play a final for the first time on the sacred grass on Sunday. If the tennis player from Murcia wins from Sinner on Sunday, he will be the fifth player to win three Wimbledon editions in a row. Björn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic preceded him.

Sinner and Alcaraz are also only the second duo in the open era to meet in the final at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in one season. The first duo? That consists of course of Federer and Rafael Nadal (in 2006). So a new rivalry.
