Sparta Rotterdam has signed Jens Toornstra on Monday. The 36-year-old midfielder, a four-time international, was a free transfer. Toornstra has already played more than four hundred matches in the Eredivisie.
Toornstra, described by Sparta as “an experienced and versatile player”, is still waiting for his first foreign adventure. Toornstra played for FC Utrecht in recent years. Before that, he played for Feyenoord, FC Utrecht and ADO Den Haag.
Technical director Gerard Nijkamp is happy with Toornstra’s arrival at Sparta. “Jens brings not only footballing ability, but also personality and leadership,” he says. “He has performed at the highest level and knows what it takes to lift a team to a higher level.”
“We have a young, ambitious selection and someone like Jens can be of great value in it, both in the dressing room and on the field. His mentality fits perfectly with Sparta: working hard, taking responsibility and never giving up.”
Toornstra will join the selection next week, in preparation for the new season. As a result, he will be reunited with trainer Maurice Steijn, under whom he previously played at ADO Den Haag.
Sparta finished twelfth in the Eredivisie last season after a strong run in the last month. Steijn signed halfway through the season and will also be the trainer at the Kasteel next season.
