
Slovakia will no longer support new EU sanctions against Russia. That is what Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Thursday at a press conference. According to him, earlier sanctions have not influenced the war in Ukraine, while they are struggling the European economy.
Fico does not see the usefulness of the sanction packages. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister would like to give his support if the European Commission is taking measures to lower electricity prices and to relax climate objectives. The latter would ensure that European car production is not in danger.
Slovakia also blocked the previous sanction package. The country is highly dependent on Russian energy and feared major consequences of the EU plan to fully stop the import of oil and gas at the latest in 2027.
Nevertheless, Fico agreed to the eighteenth sanction package in July. The European Commission then insured Slovakia that the country would get help with possible gas shortages and price increases.
The European Union is currently working on a nineteenth sanction package. The approval of all 27 Member States is required for setting sanctions. So if Slovakia does not move, the new sanction package will not be there.
Chairman António Costa of the European Council understands Slovakia’s concerns, he said at the press conference. But he made no further commitments.
