Schaatsster Robin Groot heeft op 24-jarige leeftijd een punt achter haar carrière gezet. De Noord-Hollandse heeft niet bekendgemaakt waarom ze al zo vroeg stopt.
“Na bijna twintig jaar stop ik met schaatsen. Het is een van de moeilijkste beslissingen ooit, maar het is tijd”, schrijft Groot in een bericht op Instagram. “Na jaren van keihard werken, vallen, opstaan en het vieren van successen is het moment gekomen om dit hoofdstuk af te sluiten.”
Groot werd beschouwd als een groot schaatstalent: de geboren Alkmaarse won als juniore meerdere wereldtitels. Bij de senioren kon de rijdster van Team IKO-X2O de aansluiting met de wereldtop nooit vinden.
Na een afmelding van Joy Beune mocht Groot in 2023 meedoen aan het EK allround in het Noorse Hamar. Toen eindigde ze net naast het podium. Het was het enige internationale titeltoernooi waaraan ze deelnam bij de senioren.
Ook bij de nationale kampioenschappen bleef Groot steeds buiten de medailles. Haar beste prestatie was een vierde plaats op de 5.000 meter bij de NK afstanden in 2023. Op de afgelopen NK werd ze dertiende op de 3.000 meter. Bij het NK allround werd ze vijfde.
Speed skater Robin Groot has ended her career at the age of 24. The North Holland native has not announced why she is stopping so early.
“After almost twenty years, I am stopping with skating. It is one of the most difficult decisions ever, but it is time,” Groot writes in a message on Instagram. “After years of hard work, falling, getting up, and celebrating successes, the moment has come to close this chapter.”
Groot was considered a great skating talent: the Alkmaar native won several world titles as a junior. With the seniors, the rider of Team IKO-X2O could never find the connection with the world top.
After a cancellation from Joy Beune, Groot was allowed to participate in the European Allround Championships in Hamar, Norway, in 2023. Then she finished just off the podium. It was the only international title tournament in which she participated with the seniors.
Groot also remained outside the medals at the national championships. Her best performance was a fourth place in the 5,000 meters at the Dutch Single Distance Championships in 2023. At the recent Dutch Championships, she finished thirteenth in the 3,000 meters. At the Dutch Allround Championships, she finished fifth.
