Boeing shares were worth 5 percent less at the opening of Wall Street on Thursday. Investors reacted to the crash of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner in the Indian city of Ahmedabad. Almost all occupants were killed.
The Air India aircraft was en route to London but crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad on Thursday morning (Dutch time). The Boeing had 242 people on board. Police have found two survivors. The other occupants are presumed dead.
At the opening of the American stock exchanges on Thursday, Boeing’s share was lowered by 5 percent. The Dreamliner was said to be equipped with engines from American GE Aerospace, which lost 2 percent.
The aircraft manufacturer is still gathering information about the crash. The company is in contact with Air India, Boeing said in a statement.
At least 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese and one Canadian were on board the crashed aircraft. It concerns flight number AI171. According to The Times of India, it concerns 230 passengers and 12 staff members.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks people in Ahmedabad to let their families know how they are doing. Air traffic from the airport has now been resumed.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls the crash a tragedy. “It is too heartbreaking for words,” he said.
