Shanice van de Sanden returns surprisingly in Oranjeselection after 15 months

Shanice van de Sanden surprisingly returns to the Oranjevrouwen squad after fifteen months. The 32-year-old player from Mexican side Toluca FC has been called up for the Nations League matches against Germany and Scotland.

The forward last belonged to the Oranje squad in February 2024. She then played in the consolation final of the Nations League against Germany, which was lost 0-2. As a result, the Oranjevrouwen missed out on qualifying for the Olympic Games.

Van de Sanden, who became European champion with Oranje in 2017, seemed to have been overtaken by other players. In addition, she left Europe to play for the Mexican Pachuca FC. The 97-time international now plays for Toluca FC in the same country. Nevertheless, Jonker has now brought her back into the squad.

Vivianne Miedema is also part of the 26-member squad. The striker dropped out in the previous international period with a hamstring injury and missed the rest of the season for her club Manchester City. She could therefore come into action for the Dutch national team. Compared to the previous international period, Aston Villa player Jill Baijings is also new to the group.

Jonker’s team will face Germany in Bremen on May 30. On June 3, Jonker’s team will play a home match against Scotland. That match will be played in the stadium of Willem II. After four rounds of matches, Jonker’s team has ten points, the same as Germany. The winner of the group will play in the Nations League Finals in the fall.

In July, the European Championship awaits in Switzerland. Oranje will compete in the group stage against Wales (July 5), England (July 9) and France (July 13).
