Italians and tourists can take a look at a tunnel under the Colosseum in Rome later this month. The tunnel was hidden for centuries and has been considerably restored in recent years.
The passage is named after Commodus (161-192), the emperor who is played in the film Gladiator by Joaquin Phoenix. The story goes that Commodus once survived a murder attack in a dark passage, but it is not certain whether that would have happened in this tunnel.
During Roman times, the ‘Passage of Commodus’ was mainly used by emperors to be able to enter and leave the amphitheater unseen. The underground corridor was discovered in the nineteenth century.
In recent years, restorers worked in particular on the floors and walls, which were covered with marble. They can now be viewed behind glass.
Every year millions of people come to the Colosseum, but they can’t all view the tunnel. Only eight people are allowed in the passage at the same time.
