In Screen Time, Tech reporter Rutger Otto writes on the internet every week. This time it is about texts from AI-Chatbots that end up in places where they don’t belong.
If you search on web store Bol for the words “adapted title” you will receive dozens of pages that are full of product titles written by AI. Feel free to scroll below through an anthology of screenshots I made.
The providers of these products (not bulb themselves, but web shops that boost on the Bol platform) have been too lazy to remove the standard text from Chatgpt. I can laugh about it, but it is of course very amateurish and clumsy.
This does not only happen on Bol. AI texts seep through in all digital media. 11 Bit Studios, maker of the Game The Alters , accidentally left a text made by AI in the game. And streaming service Crunchyroll also got the wind last week, when subscribers were presented worthless AI undertitement in which Chatgpt was explicitly mentioned.
People have no problem with texts made by artificial intelligence, says AI expert Remy Gieling. “Until they find out that a text has been made by AI. Then they suddenly appreciate it a lot less.” Be blessed, the ignorants, in short.
I know that many texts in web shops are already generated by AI. The online supermarket Picnic does no different for its product descriptions. The AI model will be ready with 30,000 items within half an hour. Nice and efficient and as a customer you do not realize it (if all goes well).
Strangely enough, I would trust the offer of a product like in the examples of Bol. If I tell that to marketer Marcel Nanning, he thinks that is not a strange response. “As a consumer I would think the same,” he says. “And that is not good, because trust is so important in a transaction.”
Nanning does not think it is strange that sellers use AI, because it can take a lot of work off your hands. But then you have to do well. “I find it bad that this happens,” he says about the copied AI texts on Bol. “It can even harm the brand of Bol, while they don’t even sell the products themselves.”
Well, Bol would rather not have this either, it turns out when I inquire. A spokesperson for the web store says they have these kinds of texts in sight. “Titles with AI terms is already being searched daily,” she says. “Those advertisements are temporarily offline and we send back to the partner, so that it can adjust the title. We are still investigating whether we can do so proactively in the future.”
From me the tip is already free of sellers: check by AI-generated texts just before you publish them. That takes little time and it looks more professional. “Ferrishes are often up to ourselves with things like this,” says Gieling. “For the sake of convenience, people are not going to handle it well. You can also bring a car from A to B, but it is nice to get a driver’s license first. Chatgpt can accelerate and simplify a lot, but many people will go on the road without a driver’s license.”
