Primary school Het Palet in Alblasserdam closed the school year on Thursday with a lot of emotions, a day after a teacher was stabbed at the final musical of group 8. What should have been an unforgettable evening on Wednesday ended in a drama.
“It should have been a very festive evening. The evening for when you leave the primary school. And then it ends like this.” Reinoud de Vries is quiet for a moment. The chairman of Education Group Zuid-Hollandse Values (OZHW), which includes primary school Het Palet from Alblasserdam, tries to describe the impact of the events.
He can hardly put it into words. During the farewell evening of group eight, an argument arose between three men. The master of group five of the school tried to appease the fight and jumped between the three. He was then stabbed. He is currently in the hospital. The police arrested three men.
A day later, teachers embrace each other in the schoolyard. They came together in the morning to discuss with Victim Support how they will give substance to the day. In the morning they decide to give the students all the attention and to be together as teachers in the afternoon.
But how do you do that? What can you say to children who have seen the stabbed teacher? “The most important thing is: hearing children and giving the opportunity to tell their story,” says De Vries. “Have an eye for children who are quiet and withdraw. But that is very difficult.”
The parents come to pick up their children again. They share their story with printed faces. A mother who comes running softly tells her daughter in group eight and so it was her farewell evening.
The mother did not see the stab incident happen, but the wounded master did. “My daughter is particularly scared,” she says. “I don’t fully realize what happened yet.”
And so the primary school period for dozens of students ends. Although the biggest worries are of course at the moment to the wounded teacher of group five.
The education group that includes the palette will ensure that all parents can get help for their children if needed. “Even after the summer holidays we will pay attention to this,” says De Vries. There is also contact with high schools where the students go.
Mayor Jan Willem Boersma is also in primary school on Thursday morning. He talks to some parents and teachers, although they have to go to their class quickly. “The farewell musical is something you should be able to look back on. For those children that has changed a lot,” he tells Anp news agency.
OZHW chairman De Vries expresses his admiration for the teachers, who, despite their own concerns and experiences, give the students all the attention. “They have also experienced it and you can imagine that the impact on them is also great. But this morning I heard that only one thing counts: the students. I have great respect for that.”
