Real Madrid reached the semi-finals of the Club World Cup in the United States on Saturday at the expense of Borussia Dortmund. In the thrilling final minutes, Kylian Mbappé scored with a half-bicycle kick and Dean Huijsen received a red card: 3-2.
Real already had a comfortable lead within twenty minutes in East Rutherford. Gonzalo García was able to tap in during the opening phase after a good pass from Arda Güler. Shortly afterwards, Fran García doubled the margin by promoting a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to a goal.
Dortmund seemed on their way to a 2-0 defeat, but Maximilian Beier shot the connecting goal against the ropes at the beginning of injury time. Mbappé then provided the highlight of the match. The French substitute scored with a half-bicycle kick after another cross from Güler.
Huijsen then made a mistake. The Spanish defender held Serhou Guirassy, who had broken through, in the penalty area and was sent off the field. Guirassy converted the penalty. Dortmund was also close to 3-3 in the final seconds, but Thibaut Courtois made a great save.
Real will play Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals on Wednesday. The Champions League winner was previously too strong for Bayern Munich with 2-0 on Saturday. The other semi-final on Tuesday is between Fluminense and Chelsea.
