Reading books can cause Uzbeek prisoners

Prisoners in Uzbekistan can get a reduction in sentence if they start reading books provided by the state. The Senate took on a change in the law on Thursday that makes this possible. Prisoners can be released three days earlier for every book read.

The reading list, compiled by an organization affiliated with the government, contains works that would teach the prisoners “the right spiritual and moral values”. The list has not been made public.

Prisoners can get three days of penalty reduction in per read book, up to a maximum of thirty days a year. A special committee, consisting of prison staff, teachers and psychologists, assesses whether a work has actually been read, Anewz reports.

About 13,500 prisoners in Uzbekistan are eligible for the program. Prisoners with a lifelong punishment are excluded from the scheme.
