Queen Máxima and her youngest daughter, Princess Ariane, are going to Switzerland this weekend to attend the European Women’s Football Championship. The duo will be present at the first group match of the Dutch team, which will face Wales on Saturday at 6:00 PM.
The match will be played at the Allmend Stadium in Lucerne. On Wednesday, the Dutch team will play against England, and four days later (Sunday, July 13), France will be their final opponent in the group stage. Máxima and Ariane will not be present at those two matches.
During the European Men’s Football Championship in Germany last year, the royal family was not present. Reportedly, King Willem-Alexander would only have gone to the final if the Dutch team had reached it. The Netherlands lost in the semi-final to England with 2-1.
When the Dutch women’s team became European champions in 2017, Máxima and Willem-Alexander were also present in the stadium. That tournament took place in the Netherlands.
The Women’s European Championship started on Wednesday evening. Finland won the opening match against Iceland with 1-0. Host country Switzerland lost 2-1 to Norway. On Thursday evening, the group matches Belgium-Italy and Spain-Portugal are scheduled.
