Beware of making false promises with the elections approaching. Otherwise, it is already brittle faith in politics to be under further pressure. The Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP) warns political parties on Wednesday.
“In election time it is tempting to promise more than you can live up to,” the advice says. “But that only affects low confidence in politics.”
The Dutch are already negatively voted on politics and are also not satisfied with the direction that society is heading in, writes the SCP. Trust in politics has been low since 2021 compared to the past fifteen years.
The SCP hopes to do something about that by giving input, even before all election programs have been written. Come with realistic and feasible plans and show what your vision for the Netherlands is in thirty years, is the message.
To give a front, the SCP comes with the eight “urgent social tasks” below for the election programs:
Too great promise in the field of asylum causes cynicism
One of those tasks is to work on a realistic migration policy – the subject that the last two cabinets fell over and where in recent weeks is again so much to do in political The Hague.
This is pre -eminently a complicated subject in which simple solutions do not exist. On the one hand there is the call for labor migrants, because of the shortage on the labor market. At the same time, a report published last year warns that a too large number of migrants also lead to extra pressure on the housing market, healthcare and education.
“This presents policymakers for a dilemma,” says the SCP advice. “They cannot limit migration at the same time, comply with international treaties and meet the economic demand for labor migrants.”
If too great promises are made on this subject and problems are simplified, it already plummets even more low trust in politics. According to the SCP, that promotes “cynicism and puts pressure on the relationship between government and citizen”.
‘Hostile tone does not contribute to solutions’
The SCP does not mention any parties and wants to advise especially for the future. Yet in the asylum discussion you can already see that the scenario for which the SCP fears is already taking place.
The previous coalition promised “the strictest asylum policy ever”, but the initial plan to use the emergency right soon stranded because the correct substantiation was missing. In the end, the asylum law was guided by the Lower House with steam and coming water, but how it should be done is still unclear.
At the same time, problems are simplified. Now the asylum procedures are long and reception locations are full. The coalition gave the impression that these problems are resolved more easily by withdrawing the Springing Act.
“Citizens expect politics to come up with solutions for the complex challenges in our country,” the SCP writes. “The enlargement of differences between groups in society, and the sometimes hostile and hard tone in politics, do not contribute to this.”
Beware of making false promises with the elections approaching. Otherwise, The Already Fragile Trust in Politics Will Come Under Even More Pressure. The Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) Warns Political Parties about this on Wednesday.
“In Election Time, IT, Tempting to Promise More Than You Can Deliver,” The Advice States. “But that only further undermines the low confidence in politics.”
Dutch People are already negatively Disposed Towards Politics and are also not satisfied with the direction society is heading, The SCP Writes. Trust in Politics Has Been Low Since 2021, Compared to the Past Fifteen Years.

To give a head starts, the SCP Comes up with the following Eight “Urgent Social Tasks” for the Election Programs:
Too Big A Promise In The Field of Asylum Causes Cynicism
One of Those Tasks is to work on a realistic migration policy – the subject that brought down the last two cabinets and that has the subject of so much discussion in Political The Hague in recent weeks.
This is pre-eminently a complex subject where simple solutions do not exist. On the one hand, there is a call for labor migrants, due to the tightness of the labor market. At the same time, a report published last year warns that too many migrants also lead to extra pressure on the housing market, healthcare and education.
“This poses a dilemma for policymakers,” The SCP Advice States. “They Cannot SimultaneUously Limit Migration, Comply with International Treaties and Meet the Economic Demand for Labor Migrants.”
If promises that are too big are made on this subject and problems are simplified, The Already Low Trust in Politics Will Only Plummet Further. Accordance to the SCP, This “Encourages Cynicism and Puts Pressure on the Relationship between Government and Citizens.”
‘Hostile tone does not contribute to solutions’
The SCP does not Mention Any Parties and Mainly Wants To Advise For The Future. Yet in the Asylum Debate You Can Already See That The Scenario That The SCP Fears is Already Unfolding.
The Previous Coalition Promised “The Strictest Asylum Policy Ever”, But The Initial Plan to use Emergency Law for this Soon Failed because the Correct Substantiation was Lacking. Possible, The Asylum Law was pushed through the house of representatives with steam and oncoming water, but how things should go process is Still Uncleear.
At the same time, problems are being simplified. Now the asylum procedures are long and reception locations are full. The Coalition Gave the Impression That Proese Problems would be solved more Easily by Withdrawing the Distribution Law.
“Citizens Expect Politics to Come Up With Solutions to the Complex Challenges in Our Country,” The SCP Writes. “Exaggerating differentences between Groups in society, and the Sometimes hostile and Harsh tone in politics, do not contribute to this.”
