Bondscoach Michal Probierz heeft maandag voor het eerst gereageerd op de beslissing van Robert Lewandowski om te stoppen bij het nationale elftal van Polen. De 36-jarige topspits maakte die keuze nadat Probierz hem de aanvoerdersband had ontnomen.
De rel rond de aanvoerdersband begon zondagavond, toen Probierz aan Lewandowski meedeelde dat hij de aanvoerdersband moest afstaan aan Internazionale-speler Piotr Zielinski. Lewandowski reageerde later op de avond via X dat hij niet meer voor het Poolse elftal zal uitkomen zolang Probierz de bondscoach is.
“Gezien de omstandigheden en het verloren vertrouwen van de bondscoach speel ik niet meer voor het Poolse nationale team zolang hij coach is”, schreef Lewandowski op sociale media.
Op de persconferentie voorafgaand aan de WK-kwalificatiewedstrijd tegen Finland van dinsdagavond stelden Poolse media er vragen over. “Om 20.16 uur belde ik Robert om hem de beslissing mee te delen”, vertelde de bondscoach in het Olympisch Stadion in Helsinki.
“Ik zei dat we iets moesten veranderen en dat Piotr een betere aanvoerder zou zijn. Robert antwoordde dat de aanvoerdersband niets betekende en er niets zou veranderen.”
Dat bleek toch anders te liggen. “Later belde Robert me of hij het team mocht vertellen dat hij de aanvoerdersband had opgegeven. Dat wilde ik niet, want ik heb de beslissing zelf genomen. Ik moest via de media vernemen dat hij afscheid had genomen van het nationale team.”
Bondscoach houdt deur op kier
Probierz ging niet nader in op de reden om Lewandowski de aanvoerdersband te ontnemen. De spits geldt al jaren als hét uithangbord van de nationale ploeg en is een van de grootste Poolse voetballers aller tijden.
“Na de wedstrijd tegen Moldavië (2-0-overwinning, red.) en gesprekken met de spelers en de staf had ik een dag de tijd om erover na te denken en een beslissing te nemen. Ik ben tot de conclusie gekomen dat een aanvoerderswissel goed zou zijn voor het team”, zei Probierz.
Voor Oranje is het wegvallen van Lewandowski niet ongunstig in de strijd om een WK-ticket. Polen lijkt de voornaamste concurrent van Nederland in groep G van de WK-kwalificatiereeks. Het team van bondscoach Koeman speelt op 4 september tegen Polen, dat dan dus zonder Lewandowski zou aantreden.
Al houdt Probierz de deur voor een terugkeer op een kier. “Robert is een uitstekende speler die ik zeer waardeer. Niemand hier sluit de deur voor hem. Ik wens hem het beste.”

The commotion surrounding the captain’s armband began on Sunday evening, when Probierz informed Lewandowski that he had to hand over the captain’s armband to Internazionale player Piotr Zielinski. Lewandowski responded later in the evening via X that he will no longer play for the Polish team as long as Probierz is the coach.
“Given the circumstances and the lost confidence of the coach, I will no longer play for the Polish national team as long as he is coach,” Lewandowski wrote on social media.
At the press conference prior to Tuesday evening’s World Cup qualifier against Finland, Polish media asked questions about it. “At 8:16 PM I called Robert to inform him of the decision,” the coach said at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.
“I said that we needed to change something and that Piotr would be a better captain. Robert replied that the captain’s armband meant nothing and nothing would change.”
That turned out to be different. “Later Robert called me to ask if he could tell the team that he had given up the captain’s armband. I didn’t want that, because I made the decision myself. I had to hear through the media that he had said goodbye to the national team.”
Coach keeps door ajar
Probierz did not elaborate on the reason for taking the captain’s armband away from Lewandowski. The striker has been the figurehead of the national team for years and is one of the greatest Polish football players of all time.
“After the match against Moldova (2-0 victory, ed.) and talks with the players and staff, I had a day to think about it and make a decision. I came to the conclusion that a change of captain would be good for the team,” said Probierz.
For the Dutch national team, Lewandowski’s departure is not unfavorable in the battle for a World Cup ticket. Poland seems to be the main competitor of the Netherlands in group G of the World Cup qualifying series. Coach Koeman’s team will play against Poland on September 4, which would then be without Lewandowski.
But Probierz keeps the door ajar for a return. “Robert is an excellent player whom I greatly appreciate. Nobody here closes the door for him. I wish him the best.”
