In a commercial building in Terneuzen, police found 3,000 liters of “life-threatening chemicals” on Friday that may be used for drug production. A 66-year-old suspect has been arrested.
The building on Mr. F.J. Haarmanweg came into view after a tip about the storage of raw materials for drugs, police reported on Saturday. The name of the person who stored the substances there was also mentioned.
Towards the end of the afternoon, the police raided the building and found 3,000 liters of various substances. According to a member of a specialist team to safely remove the substances, the chemicals were “very flammable”. The manner of storage would have created a “major hazard setting”.
The police are still investigating which drugs could be produced with the substances. “Small samples are being taken and the remaining substances are being destroyed,” a spokesperson said.
The 66-year-old suspect was later arrested in the evening in connection with the investigation. He turned out to have several years of imprisonment open “for various matters”. The police reported that he “can immediately start serving” that sentence.
