Outgoing cabinet is drawing a proposal for extension of the transgender law

The outgoing cabinet has wiped the plan to broaden the Transgender Act. The House of Representatives had already called for the cabinet to do so. The plan stated that transgender people should be able to change their gender in their passport more easily.

This now requires a statement from an expert. According to the plan, children under the age of sixteen could also have their gender adjusted with the permission of their parents.

The plan to implement these expansions came from the previous cabinet. But after the elections in November 2023 there was no longer a majority for it. NSC, PVV, BBB, CDA, FVD, ChristenUnie, SGP and JA21 spoke out against the plans. But then outgoing minister Franc Weerwind (legal protection) did not care.

That is why the SGP submitted a motion to the – now also outgoing – Cabinet Schoof to wipe the bill off the track. Coalition parties PVV, NSC and BBB helped that call to a majority. Outgoing State Secretary Teun Struycken (legal protection) responded to this on Wednesday.

Just like last year, the motion released a lot of indignation with progressive and left-wing parties in the room, such as D66, PvdD and GroenLinks-PvdA. The parties not only disagree with the conservative block, but also spoke of “improper management”.

For years discussion

The Transgender Act has been under discussion for years. The proposal for expanding that law has been on the table since 2021. The House of Representatives spoke about it a year later, after which little concrete happened. The Chamber had therefore not yet fully dealt with the proposal.
