Organic potatoes, fruit and vegetables increasingly popular

Organic food is slowly gaining ground in Dutch supermarkets. Potatoes, vegetables, fruit, fish and coffee in particular rise in popularity. While meat and dairy are slightly less wanted.

The sale of organic products in Dutch supermarkets is rising slightly, according to figures from Statistics Agency CBS. In the first half of this year, 3.5 percent of expenditure on food went to sustainable products, compared to 3.2 percent in the same period last year.

For eggs, the share of organic remains the highest: almost one in six eggs that are sold bears the green quality mark. That is more than 17 percent of the eggs. Organic coffee and tea are also gaining ground. Last year it was 5.9 percent, now the share of sustainable coffee and tea is 6.5 percent.

The largest increases can be seen in potatoes, fruit and vegetables, the share of which has risen biologically from 4.7 in the first half of 2024 to 5.5 percent in the same period this year. The sustainably caught fish also gains terrain and grows from 2.5 to 3.2 percent.

Meat and dairy were also more often organic in the first half of this year. That is striking because in the period between 2018 and 2024 sales ran back a bit.

What is organic?

The word ‘biological’ is a protected term within the European Union.

“With organic agriculture, animal welfare and the environment are taken into account as much as possible,” the Nutrition Center previously told NU.nl. “For example, animals have more room to live and natural behavior to show and farmers use the manure of their animals as much as possible on their own country.”

Rules are also attached to growing vegetables. For example, farmers are not allowed to use fertilizer and chemical pesticides for their crops.

Organic stores also gain ground

In the whole of 2024, total biological sales in the Netherlands grew by 9.6 percent to 1.77 billion euros, branch organization Bionext reported earlier this year. Organic specialty shops in particular did well, there was mainly more organic fish and bread sold. The sale of organic fish in supermarkets even increased by 74 percent.

The share of organic agricultural land in the Netherlands also grew in 2024. In total, 5.1 percent of Dutch agriculture is now organic.
