Oranje-International Wilms makes switch to Aston Villa during the European Championship

Lynn Wilms has announced her transfer to Aston Villa on Monday. The Dutch international was a free agent after leaving VfL Wolfsburg.

The 24-year-old Wilms had been under contract with VfL Wolfsburg since 2021, who took her over from FC Twente. It was announced in May that the defender’s contract would not be extended.

At Aston Villa, Wilms will play alongside Chasity Grant, one of her teammates with the Dutch national team at the European Championship in Switzerland. In the opening match against Wales, both Wilms and Grant were substitutes in the team of national coach Andries Jonker.

Wilms is not the first Dutch international to announce a transfer after arriving in Switzerland. Earlier, Ilse van der Zanden made a transfer just before the start of the European Championship. She was a free agent after leaving FC Utrecht and will play for Fiorentina.

Daniƫlle de Jong (from FC Twente to Juventus) announced her transfer on the day of arrival in Switzerland. In the period before that, Daniƫlle van de Donk (from Olympique Lyonnais to London City Lionesses) and Jill Roord (from Manchester City to FC Twente) had also already made a transfer.
