The Dutch national team achieved a monster score in the World Cup qualifier against Malta on Saturday thanks to outstanding performances from Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen. Both players scored twice and provided an assist at the Euroborg, playing a key role in the 8-0 victory.
For Memphis, his two goals were extra special. He scored the 1-0 (penalty) and the 2-0, equalling Robin van Persie as Oranje’s all-time top scorer in his 102nd international match. Van Persie also needed 102 international matches for his 50 goals.
Malen replaced Memphis in the 72nd minute and scored the 5-0 and the 7-0. In between, he also assisted Noa Lang’s 6-0 goal. Virgil van Dijk, Xavi Simons, and Micky van de Ven also found the net, giving Oranje its biggest win since the 11-0 victory against San Marino in 2011.
With the 8-0 victory, Oranje concludes the season in style and is on track for direct qualification for the World Cup next year in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
