Opening duel in Belgium marred by racist gestures of two Antwerp fans

Union St. Gilloise striker Promise David was racially harassed by two Royal Antwerp supporters in Friday’s opening match of the Jupiler Pro League. The home club condemns the behavior and wants to punish the perpetrators.

The 24-year-old David missed a penalty midway through the first half. Images show two Antwerp supporters making monkey noises and gestures towards the Union striker after the miss.

Antwerp takes the incident seriously. “During our match against Union, images showed two ‘fans’ making racist gestures towards Promise David of Union,” the club writes on X.

“RAFC distances itself from this reprehensible behavior and condemns it strongly. Together with the competent authorities, we will do everything to identify the perpetrators and punish them appropriately.”

Rights holder DAZN has already provided cooperation. “We have collected the images and provided them to Royal Antwerp and the police via the Pro League. Racism has no place in our football,” the streaming platform reports.

The duel between Antwerp and Union ended in a 1-1 draw. Vincent Janssen opened the scoring for Antwerp in the 36th minute with a fine free kick. Raul Florucz equalized for reigning champion Union midway through the second half.
