Only late holidaymakers may be on time for a car

The majority of holidaymakers are traveling by car this summer. But those who want to have their car checked before departure will be disappointed. Garages are completely full.

Car garages have been struggling with staff shortages for years. As a result, it can take weeks before there is space, especially in the summer months. “Mechanics also go on holiday themselves,” says the spokesperson for industry organization BOVAG.

Many car owners want to visit the garage for a check before the holiday. “Very wise, for example for an air conditioning check,” says the spokesperson. For proper operation, the filters must be replaced and the refrigerant refilled.

Holidaymakers who travel later in the summer still have a chance of getting a spot at the garage. Those who miss out can get to work themselves to reduce the chance of breakdown. “Make sure the oil and windshield washer fluid levels are up to par,” says the spokesperson. “Test the air conditioning. And check the tire pressure, good against wear and for more economical consumption.”

Tires must be inflated harder if the car is heavily loaded. The recommended tire pressure is often in the car’s instruction booklet and on a sticker, which is located, for example, on the door frame or fuel filler flap of the car.

It is also useful to bring certain items, such as extra fuses, lights and vests. In the event of a breakdown, different rules apply per country when it comes to vests, for example, so it is also good to look that up in advance. Sufficient water is also important for the driver and any passengers, should the car unexpectedly fail.
