Number of highly educated people is increasing, while MBO vacancies are open

In the past ten years, more and more students have obtained an HBO or WO Bachelor’s degree. At the same time, the number of MBO students decreased, while there is a greater demand for practically trained people, vacancy data shows.

Ten years ago, 61,000 students obtained a HBO diploma, reports the National Vacature Bank based on CBS figures. Last year 72,000 HBO students graduated. And there is an even stronger increase in the number of people with a university bachelor’s degree: from 33,000 to more than 50,000. At the same time, there are fewer MBO students: 155,000, compared to around 149,200 last year.

The question on the labor market does not fit in with this, writes the vacancy bank. Last month, for example, around 120,000 vacancies for MBO students were open. With HBO functions there were more than half less. There is even less demand for people with a scientific thinking level: 11,000 vacancies were open to that.

Among MBO students is mainly demand for technically skilled. According to Sharita Boon, director of the National Vacancy Bank, the number of MBO students with a technical diploma has increased in recent years. But it is about an increase of just over a thousand people over a period of eight years, Boon says. “You don’t fill the shortages with that.”

Part of the growth among highly educated people can be explained by the number of foreign students. In the last ten years, for example, there were 125 percent more university bachelor students from outside the EU. “Dutch courses are usually highly regarded and the figures underline this,” says Boon.

In the past ten years, more and more students have obtained a highher Professional Education (HBO) or University (wo) bachelor’s degree. At the same time, the number of senior secondary vocational education (MBO) Students decreased, while there is a greater demand for practically trained people, Accordance to vacancy data.

At the same time, there are ferwer senior secondary vocational education students again: 155,000, comparted to approachyately 149,200 Last year.

The Demand on the Labor Market Does Not Match This, Writes The Vacancy Bank. For Example, There Were Approximately 120,000 Vacancies for Senior Secondary Vocational Education Students Last Month. For Higher Professional Education Positions, There Were less than Half That Number. There is just as Less Demand for People with a Scientific Level of Thinking: There Were 11000 Vacancies for this.

Among Senior Secondary Vocational Education Students, there is a particularly demand for technically trained people. Accordance to Sharita Boon, Director of the National Vacancy Bank, The Number of Senior Secondary Vocational Education Students with a Technical Degree Has Increased in recent Years. But it is only an increase of just about a thousand people about a period of eight years, bean adds. “This does not come close to filling the shortages.”

Part of the growth in Higher Educated People Can Be Explained by the Number of Foreign Students. For example, there were 125 percent more university bachelor students from outside the eu in the past ten years. “Dutch Programs are generally highly regarded and the figures underline this,” Says Boon.
