NS knows through which Electricity Cast exploded and will investigate other trains

The explosion that occurred Sunday evening in an electrical cabinet in a train was caused by a defective capacitor, according to NS (Dutch Railways). As a precaution, NS is now conducting extra inspections on all trains with the same type of part.

A capacitor is an electronic component that temporarily stores electricity. According to NS, this is the first time that this specific type of capacitor has failed in this way. Nevertheless, all trains in which the part is present are being checked as a precaution. The exact number is still being investigated.

The explosion occurred in a moving train on the route between Uitgeest and Alkmaar, near Castricum. One passenger was slightly injured after a part of the inner wall sprang off and hit their head.

The injured passenger was taken to the hospital. Three other travelers were checked for smoke inhalation but did not need to go to the hospital.

After the incident, about 650 travelers were transported further with evacuation trains. “The safety of our travelers is paramount,” said a spokesperson for NS. “We understand that this was a frightening situation and take the incident very seriously.”
