Met twee notitieblokken vol aantekeningen als aandenken aan twee leerzame jaren als assistent in Engeland is John Heitinga (41) terug bij Ajax. Eerder dan hij dacht krijgt hij weer de kans als hoofdtrainer in Amsterdam. “Het gevoel is meteen goed.”
“Kijk eens aan, ik zie bijna allemaal dezelfde koppen als twee jaar geleden.” Heitinga kijkt nog eens goed rond in het gelegenheidsperszaaltje in Hotel Oud Londen in Zeist. Een stuk of twintig journalisten zijn afgekomen op zijn eerste persconferentie sinds zijn terugkeer als trainer van Ajax.
Lachend: “Ik heb jullie gemist. Hoewel, ik vond het ook wel lekker, twee jaar in de luwte in Engeland.”
Het was een bewuste keuze om na zijn vertrek bij Ajax in het voorjaar van 2023 buiten de media te blijven. Na vier maanden op interimbasis hoofdtrainer te zijn geweest, als opvolger van de ontslagen Alfred Schreuder, wilde de club niet met hem door. “En dat deed pijn.”
“Ik vond het toen niet chique om daar iets over te zeggen. Dat wil ik niet, Ajax is mijn club. En ook nu wil ik niet terugblikken. Dat is verspilde energie. Ik kijk liever vooruit. Veel van de mensen die er toen waren, zijn er niet eens meer.”
Het was de allang vertrokken technisch directeur Sven Mislintat die na een derde plaats in de Eredivisie en een verloren KNVB-bekerfinale tegen PSV besloot niet door te gaan met Heitinga als hoofdtrainer. In de twee jaar die volgden, versleet Ajax drie coaches.
Heitinga werkte ondertussen in Engeland. Eerst als assistent van David Moyes bij West Ham United, daarna als de rechterhand van Arne Slot bij het succesvolle Liverpool.
“Ik heb me daar geweldig kunnen ontwikkelen”, vindt hij. “Het wat toetsen waar ik als trainer stond. En veel leren. Hoe ga je om met jongens die alles gewonnen hebben wat er te winnen valt? Hoe draag je een speelwijze over? En natuurlijk heb ik ook met een schuin oog kunnen zien hoe Arne zijn persconferenties deed.” Weer met lach: “Kunnen jullie dat merken?”
Zijn vrouw Charlotte Sophie en zijn drie kinderen verhuisden niet mee naar Engeland. Zij bleven in Amsterdam, waar zoontje Lennox in de jeugdopleiding van Ajax speelt.
Het gevolg was dat Heitinga’s leven in Engeland bijna alleen maar om voetbal draaide. Hij vertelt over de lunches in Londen met Arsenal-speler Jurriën Timber. “Dan nam ik een schriftje mee en wilde ik alles weten over de werkwijze van zijn trainer, Mikel Arteta. En over Jurriëns stap van Ajax naar de Premier League. Dat was zo leerzaam voor mij als jonge trainer.”
Bij Liverpool maakte Slot Heitinga verantwoordelijk voor de analyse van de aankomende tegenstanders in de Premier League. “Dan keek ik zo vijf, zes wedstrijden terug van Chelsea. Hoe doen ze het tegen Bournemouth? Wat als ze met vijf verdedigers spelen? Dat vond ik echt leuk om te doen. Het was zo gaaf.”
Heitinga heeft twee volle notitieblokken meegenomen naar Ajax. Het is een leerzaam aandenken aan geweldige jaren, zo vertelt hij. Toch kwam de afgelopen maanden bij Liverpool het gevoel op dat het tijd was voor iets anders. Hij wilde weer op eigen benen staan.
Zijn zaakwaarnemer Rob Jansen raadde hem af om terug te gaan naar Ajax. Er waren gesprekken met meerdere clubs. Maar toen Ajax Heitinga in mei polste, was de keuze voor een terugkeer snel gemaakt.
“Ik had meteen het beste gevoel bij Ajax. Het was en is meteen goed. Natuurlijk heb ik het wel thuis aan de keukentafel besproken met mijn gezin. Ze waren enthousiast. Ik kwam weer thuis wonen.”
De terugkeer is geen verrassing voor Heitinga. “Toen ik twee jaar geleden vertrok bij Ajax, was niet de vraag: kom ik ooit terug? Nee, de vraag was: wanneer kom ik terug? Ik had alleen niet verwacht dat het zo snel zou gaan.”
Het doel is kampioen worden, wat hem als speler van de club al lukte in 2002 en 2004. Althans, Heitinga wil het. “En willen is iets anders dan moeten”, benadrukt hij. Met een plek bij de eerste twee (en daarmee een direct ticket voor de Champions League) is de clubleiding in zijn eerste seizoen ook tevreden.
Onder voorganger Francesco Farioli pakte Ajax afgelopen seizoen al bijna de titel. Heitinga is lovend over het werk van de Italiaan. “Er stond een hecht team. Ik vond het mooi om die saamhorigheid te zien.”
Verder wil hij niet te veel over Farioli praten. Hij laat alleen weten dat hij minder zal gaan rouleren dan zijn voorganger. En het spel van Ajax wordt aanvallender.
“Het wordt gecontroleerd aanvallen. Hoog druk zetten, veel kansen creëren en zo goals maken. Zo wil ik gaan spelen en dat past heel erg bij Ajax. En het is aan jullie, de journalisten, om te beoordelen of dat lukt. Ik heb er zin in.”
With two notebooks full of notes as a souvenir of two instructive years as an assistant in England, John Heitinga (41) is back at Ajax. Sooner than he thought, he gets another chance as head coach in Amsterdam. “The feeling is immediately good.”
“Look, I see almost all the same faces as two years ago.” Heitinga looks around the temporary press room in Hotel Oud Londen in Zeist. About twenty journalists have come to his first press conference since his return as coach of Ajax.
Laughing: “I’ve missed you. Although, I also liked it, two years in the shelter in England.”
It was a conscious choice to stay out of the media after his departure from Ajax in the spring of 2023. After being head coach on an interim basis for four months, as successor to the dismissed Alfred Schreuder, the club did not want to continue with him. “And that hurt.”
“I didn’t think it was chic to say anything about that at the time. I don’t want that, Ajax is my club. And even now I don’t want to look back. That’s wasted energy. I prefer to look ahead. Many of the people who were there then are no longer there.”
It was the long-departed technical director Sven Mislintat who, after a third place in the Eredivisie and a lost KNVB Cup final against PSV, decided not to continue with Heitinga as head coach. In the two years that followed, Ajax went through three coaches.
Heitinga worked in England in the meantime. First as assistant to David Moyes at West Ham United, then as Arne Slot’s right-hand man at the successful Liverpool.
“I was able to develop myself greatly there,” he says. “To test where I was as a coach. And learn a lot. How do you deal with guys who have won everything there is to win? How do you transfer a way of playing? And of course I was also able to see out of the corner of my eye how Arne did his press conferences.” Again with a laugh: “Can you tell?”
His wife Charlotte Sophie and his three children did not move to England with him. They stayed in Amsterdam, where son Lennox plays in the Ajax youth academy.
As a result, Heitinga’s life in England revolved almost entirely around football. He talks about lunches in London with Arsenal player Jurriën Timber. “Then I took a notebook with me and wanted to know everything about the working method of his coach, Mikel Arteta. And about Jurriën’s move from Ajax to the Premier League. That was so educational for me as a young coach.”
At Liverpool, Slot made Heitinga responsible for the analysis of the upcoming opponents in the Premier League. “Then I watched Chelsea five or six games back. How do they do against Bournemouth? What if they play with five defenders? I really enjoyed doing that. It was so cool.”
Heitinga has taken two full notebooks to Ajax. It is an instructive souvenir of great years, he says. Yet in recent months at Liverpool, the feeling arose that it was time for something else. He wanted to stand on his own two feet again.
His agent Rob Jansen advised him not to go back to Ajax. There were talks with several clubs. But when Ajax sounded out Heitinga in May, the choice for a return was quickly made.
“I immediately had the best feeling at Ajax. It was and still is good. Of course I discussed it at the kitchen table at home with my family. They were enthusiastic. I came home again.”
The return is no surprise to Heitinga. “When I left Ajax two years ago, the question was not: will I ever return? No, the question was: when will I return? I just didn’t expect it to happen so quickly.”
The goal is to become champion, which he already succeeded in as a player of the club in 2002 and 2004. At least, Heitinga wants it. “And wanting is different from having to,” he emphasizes. With a place in the top two (and thus a direct ticket for the Champions League), the club management is also satisfied in his first season.
Under predecessor Francesco Farioli, Ajax almost won the title last season. Heitinga is complimentary about the Italian’s work. “There was a close-knit team. I thought it was nice to see that togetherness.”
Furthermore, he doesn’t want to talk too much about Farioli. He only lets it be known that he will rotate less than his predecessor. And Ajax’s game will be more attacking.
“It will be controlled attacking. Putting high pressure, creating many chances and scoring goals like that. That’s how I want to play and that suits Ajax very well. And it’s up to you, the journalists, to judge whether that succeeds. I’m looking forward to it.”
