Ruim dertig jaar na haar debuut tennist Venus Williams nog steeds. De 45-jarige superster weet van geen ophouden en verraste deze zomer met haar terugkeer op de baan. Donderdag speelt ze in Cincinnati. “Alleen Serena ontbreekt nog.”
Terwijl tenniscommentator Kristie Boogert deze week terugrijdt vanuit de tv-studio’s in Hilversum, bereidt Williams zich in de Verenigde Staten voor op haar tweede toernooi in zestien maanden. 25 jaar geleden stonden de twee tennissters nog tegenover elkaar in de olympische dubbelfinale in Sydney.
“Lang geleden, hè? Die moet even landen”, zegt de 51-jarige Boogert lachend als NU.nl haar herinnert aan de verloren finale tegen de Williams-zusjes. “En Venus staat gewoon nog op de tennisbaan. Bizar. Zij heeft al drie generaties tennissters doorstaan.”
De Amerikaanse wereldster weet van geen ophouden en neemt donderdag deel aan het WTA-toernooi van Cincinnati. Deze zomer keerde Williams onverwachts terug in Washington, waar ze na zestien maanden afwezigheid meedeed aan het enkel- en dubbelspel.
“Haar terugkeer verbaast me. Ik weet niet hoe ze het doet op die leeftijd. Ze heeft zelfs nog technische aanpassingen doorgevoerd”, zegt Boogert. “Toen ik haar twee jaar geleden zag in Rosmalen, vroeg ik haar: wat doe ik verkeerd? Jij speelt en ik sta achter de microfoon.”
“Wat jij doet is ook leuk en belangrijk”, zei Williams. “Ze was blij om mij te zien en vroeg of ik ook even langskwam om te kletsen met Serena (Williams, red.). Ze waren zo enthousiast en benaderbaar. Dat is niet altijd zo geweest, zeker niet op de baan.”
‘Voelde mijn rechterarm niet meer’
Boogert herinnert zich de eerste ontmoeting met de Williams-zusjes tijdens de US Open in 2000. “Dat was zo intimiderend. Je begint bij het betreden van die baan al met een 3-0-achterstand.”
“Ze zijn imposant en dominant. Je weet met die krachtige en onvoorspelbare slagen nooit waar die bal gaat komen. En dan vliegt het gekreun, gesteun en gegil je ook nog om de oren. Niet te doen gewoon.”
Ook Demi Schuurs weet hoe het is om tegenover Williams te staan. De Nederlandse dubbelspecialiste nam het tijdens de Fed Cup in 2018 samen met Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove op tegen Venus en haar zus. “Ik was toen zo nerveus. Door de spanning voelde ik mijn rechterarm niet meer. Ze waren zo groot en sterk. Ik dacht: hoe kom ik hier in godsnaam langs?”
Schuurs en haar dubbelpartner hielden hun zenuwen in bedwang en wonnen van het superduo (6-2 en 6-3). “Het hielp dat ze toen niet meer op hun best waren. Maar het was alsnog heel intimiderend om die twee legendes tegenover je te zien staan.”
Kritiek op deelname Venus
Ook in 2025 zorgt Venus nog voor de nodige zenuwen bij haar tegenstanders, al is er ook kritiek. Moeten wildcards niet naar jonge, talentvolle speelsters gaan? En waarom ga je op je 45e nog een toernooi spelen als je al zoveel hebt bereikt?
“Waarom niet?”, pareerde Williams de kritische vragen op haar persconferentie in Washington. “Vaak zeg ik nee tegen aanbiedingen van wildcards, maar nu was ik toch al aan het trainen en ik houd van hardcourt. Het vuur zit nog altijd in me. Tennis is mijn passie.”
Boogert en Schuurs snappen de kritiek. “Voor toernooidirecteuren is haar terugkeer fantastisch. Iedereen koopt een kaartje voor Venus en overal waar ze komt ontstaat er een hype. Dat krijgt de Williams-familie nog altijd voor elkaar”, zegt Boogert. “Maar er moet ook ruimte zijn voor nieuw talent.”
Schuurs: “Commercieel gezien is het interessant. Maar of ze qua tennis nog iets extra’s gaat brengen, weet ik niet. Natuurlijk is het goed om een grote naam in de tenniswereld te hebben. Al is het maar voor de promotie van het vrouwentennis, maar het moet geen marketingstunt worden. Al mag ze mij altijd bellen, als ze in de toekomst nog een dubbelpartner zoekt.”
Geruchten over Serena laaien op
De hype rondom Venus werd nog groter toen de 43-jarige Serena afgelopen weken foto’s plaatste vanaf de tennisbaan. Zit er een comeback aan te komen? Venus voedde de geruchten. “Alleen Serena ontbreekt nog”, zei Venus in Washington. “We hebben altijd alles samen gedaan. Dus natuurlijk mis ik haar.”
Vragen over een mogelijke comeback stelde ze niet aan haar zus, zei Venus Williams. “Maar Serena kan een half jaar niets doen en de ballen dan perfect raken. Zij is zo goed. Als ze terugkomt, zal ze het iedereen laten weten.”
Schuurs en Boogert zouden verrast zijn als Serena voor haar zus Venus terugkeert uit haar tennispensioen. “Al ziet ze er op Instagram wel fitter uit dan ooit”, merkt Schuurs op. Boogert: “Als Serena het voor iemand zou doen, is het haar zus. Dat is zo’n twee-eenheid.”
“Wellicht kom ik ze dan wel tegen bij de US Open”, stelt Schuurs. “Dat zou bizar zijn.” Voor Boogert zal er nooit meer een herhaling komen van de olympische finale van 2000. Maar het commentaar verzorgen bij een mogelijke terugkeer van de zusjes is nog wel mogelijk. “Dat zou ongelooflijk zijn.”

While tennis commentator Kristie Boogert is driving back from the TV studios in Hilversum this week, Williams is preparing in the United States for her second tournament in sixteen months. 25 years ago, the two tennis players faced each other in the Olympic doubles final in Sydney.
“Long ago, right? That needs to sink in,” says the 51-year-old Boogert with a laugh as NU.nl reminds her of the lost final against the Williams sisters. “And Venus is still on the tennis court. Bizarre. She has outlasted three generations of tennis players.”
The American world star knows no stopping and will participate in the WTA tournament in Cincinnati on Thursday. This summer, Williams unexpectedly returned in Washington, where she participated in the singles and doubles after sixteen months of absence.
“Her return surprises me. I don’t know how she does it at that age. She has even made technical adjustments,” says Boogert. “When I saw her in Rosmalen two years ago, I asked her: what am I doing wrong? You play and I stand behind the microphone.”
“What you do is also fun and important,” said Williams. “She was happy to see me and asked if I would also come by to chat with Serena (Williams, ed.). They were so enthusiastic and approachable. That hasn’t always been the case, especially not on the court.”
‘Couldn’t feel my right arm anymore’
Boogert recalls the first meeting with the Williams sisters during the US Open in 2000. “That was so intimidating. You already start with a 3-0 deficit when you enter that court.”
“They are imposing and dominant. With those powerful and unpredictable strokes, you never know where that ball is going to come. And then the groaning, moaning and screaming also fly around your ears. Just impossible.”
Demi Schuurs also knows what it is like to face Williams. The Dutch doubles specialist played against Venus and her sister during the Fed Cup in 2018 together with Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove. “I was so nervous then. Due to the tension, I couldn’t feel my right arm anymore. They were so big and strong. I thought: how am I going to get past this?”
Schuurs and her doubles partner kept their nerves in check and won from the super duo (6-2 and 6-3). “It helped that they were no longer at their best then. But it was still very intimidating to see those two legends standing opposite you.”
Criticism on Venus’ participation
Also in 2025, Venus still causes the necessary nerves for her opponents, although there is also criticism. Shouldn’t wildcards go to young, talented players? And why are you still playing a tournament at the age of 45 when you have already achieved so much?
“Why not?” Williams parried the critical questions at her press conference in Washington. “I often say no to offers of wildcards, but now I was already training and I love hard court. The fire is still in me. Tennis is my passion.”
Boogert and Schuurs understand the criticism. “For tournament directors, her return is fantastic. Everyone buys a ticket for Venus and a hype arises wherever she comes. The Williams family still manages to do that,” says Boogert. “But there must also be room for new talent.”
Schuurs: “Commercially it is interesting. But whether she is going to bring something extra in terms of tennis, I don’t know. Of course it is good to have a big name in the tennis world. If only for the promotion of women’s tennis, but it should not become a marketing stunt. Although she can always call me, if she is still looking for a doubles partner in the future.”
Rumors about Serena flare up
The hype surrounding Venus became even bigger when the 43-year-old Serena posted photos from the tennis court in recent weeks. Is there a comeback coming? Venus fueled the rumors. “Only Serena is missing,” said Venus in Washington. “We have always done everything together. So of course I miss her.”
She did not ask her sister questions about a possible comeback, said Venus Williams. “But Serena can do nothing for half a year and then hit the balls perfectly. She is so good. If she comes back, she will let everyone know.”
Schuurs and Boogert would be surprised if Serena returns from her tennis retirement for her sister Venus. “Although she looks fitter than ever on Instagram,” Schuurs notes. Boogert: “If Serena would do it for someone, it is her sister. That is such a unity.”
“Perhaps I will meet them at the US Open,” says Schuurs. “That would be bizarre.” For Boogert, there will never be a repeat of the 2000 Olympic final. But providing commentary on a possible return of the sisters is still possible. “That would be incredible.”
